A Little Trivia About Markers

Nov 29, 2021

Why does ink seep into paper? What can I do to avoid this?

Since the marker's ink is dye ink, it will seep into the paper used, so the ink will always seep out of the paper to some extent. Therefore, I recommend placing a piece of waste paper below to protect your working surface. To avoid excessive inking, I also recommend not putting too much pressure on the mark when drawing. The inking degree also depends on the type of paper you use. In the range of copy paper selection, it is recommended to choose at least 80g above the scale to prevent leakage more effectively. Heavy mark paper and soft watercolor paper, while easily permeable, are easier to create gradients and blend colors on these surfaces. We recommend that you try various types of paper to find the paper that best suits you. Novice recommended above 110 g 180 g a thick writing paper, (first rule out the sketch paper, sketch paper, watercolor paper) .

Various types of paper can be used, such as plain copy paper, caricature paper, construction paper, drawing paper or watercolor paper.  The finish and comfort of the painting may vary depending on what you use, so I recommend trying a few varieties first.  If you are not familiar with illustrations, we can at least 110g graduated drawing paper, below 180 they can prevent too much ink diffusion.  At the same time to ensure the smooth mixing of colors.

Why does the color of the paper vary depending on which paper I use?

Because marker inks are dye-based, they behave differently than pigment inks when applied to paper, where the pigment stays on the surface and the dye seeps into it. That's why the color obtained with dye inks looks slightly different, and even if the same color is used, it may look brighter or duller depending on the paper used.
