How Were Sticky Notes Invented

Mar 22, 2022

Tiny sticky notes are everywhere. Afraid you'll forget the time for a meeting? Stick one on! Suddenly have a whimsical idea? Put one up! Need to leave a message? Stick one! But you may not know how the Sticky Notes was invented, it was actually invented by two accidents.

In the 1970s, Spencer F. Silve joined 3M, where his research group was tasked with developing a more powerful adhesive. One day, he put a chemical that could polymerize molecules into the reaction, but by chance, he put more than he normally would. Instead of preparing a stronger adhesive, he produced a weaker one. This adhesive has a high viscosity, but is very easy to peel. After peeling it can be used again and again.

Another doctor, Art Fry, who often attends choir practice, was looking for a bookmark for his hymn book that would neither fall off nor damage the hymnal. He heard about Dr. Silver's research, so he sought out some samples from Dr. Silver, made some improvements and made a sticky bookmark. The problem with his hymn book was solved.

After that, Dr. Fry's research group made some more samples and sent them to colleagues at 3M to try out. This time the response was very good. After a difficult initial marketing process, the little sticky notes became a necessity in the office within a few years and was sold worldwide.
