How to Efficiently Use Highlighter to Take Notes?

Feb 15, 2022

Using a highlighter is about finding the most important information in the shortest amount of time. When you fill a whole book with strokes, its effect disappears! Just like in Figure 2, the whole book is important. And that shouldn't be the case!

This article is based on how to use the color progression method to memorize when the focus is known!

I like to use yellows, oranges and reds for color progression for emphasis! Usually in college teachers will emphasise, and you don't need to use a highlighter at this time. You can use a ballpoint pen to frame the key points, which is faster than highlighting line by line! . During class time is tight and the task is heavy, mainly to quickly record the key points, it is difficult to remember all of them in the mind. The memory is to wait until reviewing in the library or dormitory, then you can take out the highlighter.

You've already taken notes, or selected good review material!

Yellow, or the lightest of the colors you choose, is what you marked the first time you read the book. Usually highlighters can have two ends, or a single one doesn't matter. If the knowledge point is very unfamiliar, then use the thick end of the sentence to underline it; if it is only relatively unfamiliar, then use the thin end to underline!

On the second review, your main focus will be on the yellow highlighter. You need to come up with yellows and oranges. If the underlined part is not familiar, it is bolded with a yellow highlighter. If the part of the original yellow bold highlighter is still unfamiliar, you can use orange to cover it. At this point, you have two color levels. The orange one is more unfamiliar to you, the yellow one is relatively familiar!

When reviewing again, you will only have a highlighter on hand! I chose red. If you're worried that red and yellow will mix into orange and cause confusion, you can choose green or blue. I have my own review system and red doesn't bother me, so I've used red/pink so far. After going through - brushing, after brushing two, brushing three times, the rusty spots will be even less! These spots are theoretically 20-30% of the area of the yellow highlighter. Depending on your familiarity, the most unfamiliar ones are bolded in red, and the slightly unfamiliar ones are underlined with a red highlighter.

If time permits, original books or notes may be used. But only look at the red part when reviewing.

The most important thing to note is that you must be faithful to your true feelings every time you review! Don't use fluorescent colors because you are worried about missing the test center. And don't deliberately draw little content in order to show that you have a good grasp of it.

Please remember: learning is for yourself!
